Hey guys! Today I’m going to rank all of the songs on Taylor Swift’s 1989 (not including bonus tracks). I know the album is a year old, but it’s still producing singles, and it’s been long enough for me to have a final opinion. I’m going to rate each song by lyricism, catchiness, and relatability ( how much you feel like you are or once were Taylor in accordance with each particular song). So let’s get started!
Disclaimer: I am a total Swiftie and every song on the album is a masterpiece in its own way. Trust me, this is an extremely difficult decision to make.
13. This Love
This song is kinda meh compared to the others in my opinion. But it’s still good.
Lyrics: 5/10
Catchiness: 1/10
Relatability: 6/10
12. Clean
I totally see where Tay was going with this one. It’s definitely not bad, I just don’t think is very good. But then again, this is in comparison to the rest the album.
Lyrics: 5/10
Catchiness: 2/10
Relatability: 4/10
*This where it gets SUPER difficult and I could probably go either way with a lot of these songs
11. Bad Blood
Okay, so I know I’ll get some hate for this. But it’s just not my favorite. Maybe it’s because it plays on the radio nonstop. But I still sing along almost every time, and I still love it.
Lyrics: 6/10
Catchiness: 7/10
Relatability: 4/10
10. Style
This song is great! I love it! But the lyrics just don’t hit home as hard as some of the others. Sorry Taylor!!!!
Lyrics: 8/10
Catchiness: 8/10
Relatability: 6/10
9. Welcome to New York
This song reminds me of driving on Lakeshore Drive in Chicago. It brings excitement and is flat out invigorating. ❤
Lyrics: 8/10
Catchiness: 7/10
Relatability: 8/10
8. Out of the Woods
This song describes the feeling of waiting for the calm after the storm. It has very descriptive lyrics that provide a great visual, and almost gives you chills. Definitely worth the top 10.
Lyrics: 10/10
Catchiness: 7/10
Relatability: 9/10
7. How You Get the Girl
This so is so fun and innocent. The catchy tune is uplifting and fun, just like Taylor. Perfect if you like light, bubblegum pop, like the Spice Girls or “Picture Perfect” by Charity Vance.
Lyrics: 9/10
Catchiness: 8/10
Relatabilty: 7/10 (everybody wishes though *sigh*)
6. I Wish You Would
I feel like this song completely describes my essence. I feel like I have lived, and I still living every word. I know it isn’t typically rated this high. But it totally speaks to me.
Lyrics: 10/10
Catchiness: 5/10
Relatability: 10/10
5. Wildest Dreams
This song shows off a darker side of Swift. The song reminds me of fantasy and true love. It has a similar vibe to some of her other songs like Starlight, Love Story, Our Song, and Mine. But it depicts it in a more adult way, which is only appropriate since she isn’t the 16 year old girl who always locked herself in her room with her guitar and poured her feelings out anymore. This is classic Taylor, but more matured.
Lyrics: 8/10
Catchiness: 7/10
Relatability: 9/10
4. All You Had To Do Was Stay
This song to me is about an on/off relationship that just needs to rest in peace. It has a catchy hook and is one of my faves.
Lyrics: 6/10
Catchiness: 9/10
Relatability: 7/10
3. I Know Places
The lyrics to this song are beautiful and metaphorical. It makes me think of pure bliss and adventure. Who wouldn’t want to be in this song?
Lyrics: 10/10
Cachiness: 9/10
Relatability: 6/10 (again, we wish *sighs again*)
2. Shake it Off
Everybody in the English-speaking, and probably non-english-speaking world knows this song. Its gotten TONS of airplay. The message is perfect: Don’t let the haters get to you, keep doing you. But most importantly….. SHAKE IT OFF! All I can say to Tay about this song is YOU GO GIRL!
Lyrics: 8/10
Catchiness: 10/10
Relatability: 10/10 GOALS
1. Blank Space
This song is the ultimate Taylor ex song. It’s the official anthem of breakups. It has the perfect message of self love and slaying life. Perfect.
Lyrics: 9/10
Catchiness: 9/10
Relatability: 8/10
So I crunched some numbers based on the scores I gave…..
Mathematically, 1989 has a 7.8 in LYRICS, a 6.8 in CATCHINESS, and a 7.2 in RELATABILITY.
So maybe I was a bit of a tough critic! I would give nines and tens if I was rating the album overall, but that was the average of each category.
Either way, 1989 is an awesome album that will be valued as a classic for MANY years to come!
